Millennials make up about 25% of the U.S. workforce. This generation—born between 1980 and 2000—has a different perspective on career growth, technology, and work/life balance. How can your business maximize its millennial workforce? Consider four keys.

1. Technology

For millennials, technology is a way of life. They expect to use it at home, at work, and at play. In a recent PricewaterhouseCoopers survey, over half the millennials surveyed said they use their own technology to help them at work. 78% of them say that using the technology they like at work makes them more effective.

Below are some questions to help you consider whether or not your business is doing its best to engage this generation.

  • Do you ensure employees have access to the technology they need to get their job done?
  • When appropriate, does your IT policy allow employees to use their own technology to accomplish everyday tasks?
  • Are you using social networking, instant messaging, or blogs to communicate with employees?

2. Work/Life Balance

Work/life balance is important to most employees, including millennials. Ensure the work/life initiatives of your company are clearly communicated in job postings, interviews, and during new-employee orientation. Your business can attract top candidates by letting them know about work/life perks, including:

  • Flexible work schedules
  • Remote work
  • Job sharing
  • Virtual meetings

3. Feedback

Texting, social media, and instant messaging provide opportunities for continuous feedback. Millennials grew up with these options for communicating and getting instant feedback from teachers, friends, and family. And they expect similar feedback in the workplace. Implement a program for regular coaching and feedback. Giving feedback doesn’t require a formal meeting. You can find ways to chat with or text employees for a job well done or to provide constructive feedback.

4. Opportunities for Growth

Millennials have gained a reputation for job hopping. But what they really want are opportunities for growth. In addition to competitive wages, your employees want to use their skills, gain more experience, and be given more responsibility. This generation of employees is ambitious, and if a business fails to provide opportunities for growth, they are more likely than previous generations to become bored or seek opportunities elsewhere.
