70 to 80 percent of people who find a new job thank networking for the results. But there’s more to it than just meeting a lot of people and letting them know you’re looking for job opportunities.

Consider three ways to effectively network.

1) Get Uncomfortable

You might be hesitant to network because you don’t want people to think you’re pushy or trying to take advantage of them. Don’t rush the process. Enjoy it. Relax, converse, and don’t look for anything in return. Not everyone you meet will become part of your network, but you will build relationships with some professionals who can give you feedback, insight, and encouragement. Remember to provide mutual support to your connections.

After you’ve built a relationship, you can make known your career goals and interests. And it won’t sound pushy at all. Most people enjoy helping others. Especially connect with people within your preferred industry or profession, but don’t make it exclusive. Select people with personalities, cultures, and interests different from yours. Different perspectives can help you grow personally and professionally. How can you find contacts?

  • Attend conferences and seminars
  • Join professional associations
  • Attend industry-specific job fairs
  • Get recommendations from colleagues and friends
  • Attend professional network meetings

2) Know Your Goals

What are your industry and job interests? Are you making a career shift? Do you need advice? Be prepared to clearly and concisely explain your goals, what you’re looking for, and what you have to offer. Your decisiveness can help your contacts feel more comfortable about referring or recommending you for job opportunities.

3) Maintain Network Relationships

Prioritize your contacts and keep in touch. Schedule an occasional meeting, phone call, or video chat. Relationships of any kind won’t last unless you make the effort. What can you do to stay in touch, beyond just saying hello?

  • Have something to share – An article, an accomplishment, or a good laugh
  • Express appreciation – For insight, influence, encouragement, or a referral
  • Show personal interest – Congratulate them on career milestones, a new job, or an award

 

If your networking efforts aren’t getting results, don’t get discouraged. Keep adding new contacts, building relationships, and communicating with them.
