Do you have an upcoming interview? There is no substitute for being prepared. What you say—and how you say it—as well as your behavior during the interview can make or break your chances for a second interview or a job offer.

There are practical tips to help you prepare and advance to the next level.

1) Know Yourself

Examine yourself as a potential job candidate from the perspective of an employer. Ask yourself the same questions that an interviewer will ask. The way you answer them should be clear and convincing. If you’re not convinced, neither will an employer be. Think of what an employer would want to know about you. Consider some questions to ask yourself:

  • What are my strengths?
  • What are my weaknesses?
  • What actual events in my work history can I use to show I’m organized, trustworthy, or a team player?
  • What examples can I give to show I can handle the leadership, high-volume, or high-pressure role I’m applying for?
  • Why am I interested in this field, company, and job?
  • What are my career goals?

Think of concise, but specific examples to show why you’re qualified for the position. It can help you get placed among the top candidates.

2) Know Your Résumé

An effective résumé includes a brief summary of your skills and accomplishments. Regularly review your résumé to ensure it is accurate and current. During the interview, be prepared to discuss experiences from your work history. You might be asked to provide specific examples of your qualifications, including:

  • Technical or medical knowledge, protocol, or terminology
  • How you used certain technology or equipment on the job
  • Notable accomplishments in a position that match the employer’s needs

3) Know Your Prospective Employer

Before your interview, take time to research the company. Depending on the size of the company, you can find information online through the company’s website, competitors’ sites, online business news, or business publications.

Many candidates benefit by researching a business even before applying for a position. Your knowledge of the company can increase your confidence and enthusiasm about working there. When you’re asked why you want to work for the company, you can provide specific, convincing reasons. Some of the things you want to find out about a company include:

  • Awards, news, and events
  • Its clients, products, and services
  • Its competitors
  • Its culture and mission
  • Its financial status
  • Its scope
  • When it was established
